Write of Passage
One single mother has turned the hassle of relocating into a
best-selling guidebook.

Chock-full of Ideas
How often has an expat parent lamented the small size of Hong Kong, and
expressed the notion that it takes an airplane ride to somewhere in
order to show the kids a good time? Thankfully, there is an energetic
Canadian single-mom among us who just wrote a book chock-full of ideas
and useful information that shows us there is much more to Hong Kong for
kids than Ocean Park and a trip to the beach.
Sarah Woods came to Hong Kong on a whim in 2000, with three-year-son
Oliver in tow. The dotcom bust the following year meant that Sarah had a
lot of time on her hands to explore Hong Kong with her son. And, it
appears that in her few years here, she and Oliver have been to far more
places than many a long-term expat. The pocket-size guide includes a
chapter for new arrivals, which gives the lo-down on things from Octopus
cards to organic food stores to rental babysitters.
The major expat enclaves are listed and described, and some information
is given as to buying real estate and finding schools. But the `meat' in
this handy guide lies in the sheer volume of places to go and see and
do.
-- Karmel Schreyer, The Asian Review of
Books. Read the
