Blacksmith Books is an English-language publishing house based in Hong Kong and distributed throughout all the bits of the world that we can reach. Our focus is non-fiction with a local angle, though we also publish a couple of fiction titles a year. You’ll find our books on sale through retailers in Asia, the United States, Canada, the UK and Australia.
I’m the publisher, and I’ve been running Blacksmith Books since 2003. It started off when three writer/artist friends asked me to help them publish the books they had in mind. None of us had any experience in book publishing. But to our pleasant surprise, all three books took off and sold well, and the happy beginning encouraged us to carry on with it. We have since published close to 100 books by a similar number of authors, most of them going into multiple print runs.
In the early days, our books were available only in Hong Kong — in bookstores like Bookazine, Swindons, Commercial Press and Page One, which continue to support us — then in Singapore, Shanghai and a few other cities in Asia, but as time went on, we were able to sign up with overseas distributors in most parts of the world where English books are sold. This put our publications on the shelves of retailers like Foyles, Waterstones, Chapters/Indigo and Barnes & Noble. They’re available through all the well known online booksellers too. I am always slightly amazed that our books about Hong Kong and Chinese culture sell in such distant places as London and Los Angeles, but I’m very glad that they do.
Blacksmith titles have been featured and reviewed by the Daily Telegraph, BBC, Huffington Post, South China Morning Post, Wall Street Journal, RTHK, Time Out, China Daily, TVB, Straits Times, Christian Science Monitor, Bangkok Post and other media worldwide.
