About the authors

LINDSAY VARTY is an award-winning writer, freelance journalist and former professional rugby player based in Hong Kong. She lives and breathes Hong Kong and is fascinated by its culture and history. As a young girl, her parents would take her to eat congee in Sham Shui Po, order snacks from dai pai dong, and get haircuts at traditional barber shops. Her parents wanted their children to discover the real Hong Kong and to know its people. Welly the Wild Boar is her attempt to share and celebrate that love with other children growing up in Hong Kong.
Lindsay now gives talks to schools and societies and runs local walking tours which focus on Hong Kong culture. Her work has been featured on TEDx, CNN, The Guardian, CCTV, and more locally in SCMP, Localiiz and Sassy. She was a featured author at the 2021 Hong Kong International Literary Festival. She hopes that her work can encourage people to take a deeper interest in local heritage and community and help support Hong Kong’s unique cultural identity.

CATHERINE CHOI is an illustrator currently studying Illustration and Visual Media at the London College of Communication. Born in Busan, South Korea, and raised in Hong Kong, her work brings stories to life and transforms the ordinary into fantasy through her art. Her love for illustration began at the age of 5, when she discovered how helpful drawing was in conversations whenever she was too shy to talk. It was the key that opened up a new door for her to express herself to others, and eventually it became her passion to pursue as a career. She loves to play Mario Kart and watch Ghibli films in her free time but baking and discovering new eateries is her number one hobby, so good food and the nostalgic stories that stem from it is what inspires her most. She hopes that both kids and adults around the world can connect with her artwork in Welly the Wild Boar.
