Dr. Maisie Meyer was born and raised in the colonial setting of Calcutta (Kolkata), India and hails from a Baghdadi Jewish family. She is a double graduate in English and Humanities, both with honours, and was awarded a PhD from the London School of Economics in 1994.
From Hong Kong to London, Dr. Meyer has travelled the world to lecture and present papers on Baghdadi Jews in the eastern Diaspora. Her previous book, From the Rivers of Babylon to the Whangpoo: A Century of Sephardi Jewish Life in Shanghai, is considered a definitive history of the Baghdadi Jewish merchants who settled in Shanghai in the mid-19th century.
